This Assistant Accountant role is a 6-month fixed-term opportunity working 15 hours per week (0.4 FTE) across our Nedlands and East Perth offices. The role supports the Finance Manager and broader finance function in delivering accurate and timely financial processing, reconciliations, reporting and compliance activities. Working closely with the Finance Manager and wider finance team, this role contributes to the effective operation of the accounting function through strong Excel capability, attention to detail, and practical support across reconciliations, budgeting, audit preparation and transaction processing. The role is expected to work one day in Nedlands and one day in East Perth, with flexibility to spread the hours across 3 days if this better suits school hours.
The Role
- Assisting with journals, invoices and other financial transactions accurately and within required timeframes
- Supporting balance sheet and general ledger reconciliations and following up outstanding items in a timely manner
- Assisting with month-end and year-end tasks including accruals, prepayments, reconciliations and supporting workpapers
- Supporting the preparation of budgets, forecasts and routine financial reports for managers and the finance team
- Using strong Excel skills to prepare reconciliations, analyse variances, manipulate data and produce accurate reporting schedules
- Assisting with internal and external audit preparation, including audit files, supporting documentation and responses to queries
- Supporting compliance activities relating to BAS, GST, FBT, PAYG and other statutory requirements
- Contributing to continuous improvement initiatives and providing timely, professional support on routine finance matters
The Candidate
We are looking for a capable and detail-oriented finance professional who enjoys working as part of a collaborative team. The right person will bring strong accounting fundamentals, excellent Excel skills and a practical approach to financial processing, reconciliations, reporting support and compliance activities.
The ideal candidate will:
- Hold a degree qualification in accounting, finance or a related discipline, or bring equivalent practical experience in a similar role
- Have experience supporting financial processing, reconciliations, month-end activities and reporting in a finance environment
- Bring strong Excel capability, including confidence working with formulas, reconciliations, data analysis and reporting schedules
- Have a sound understanding of general accounting principles and exposure to audit and statutory compliance processes such as BAS, GST, FBT and PAYG
- Be highly organised, accurate and able to manage competing priorities and deadlines
- Demonstrate a collaborative approach and the ability to build positive working relationships across the organisation
- Show initiative, good judgement and a continuous improvement mindset
- Be committed to providing helpful, professional and timely support to internal stakeholders
