Frequently Asked Questions

There are many ways to access assistive technology (AT). You can use the National Equipment Database (NED) to find and buy many different types of AT. Indigo owns and operates NED, Australia’s largest and comprehensive assistive technology one-stop-shop, offering information on more than 25,000 products and the option to buy selected items. If you have funding, you can use this website to obtain a proforma invoice to send to your funding provider. Check it out at www.askned.com.au You can also discuss AT options through Indigo's therapy services. Clients can visit our Experience Centre to view and try out a range of AT devices and equipment, and our allied health professionals can work with you to help you select and access the right AT for you.

Depending on the complexity of the AT equipment, an occupational therapist or AT prescriber can help you determine the right assistive technology for you. Equipment like powered wheelchairs or a walking frame will require an OT to help you select, set up, and use, but low-risk AT, like a two-handled mug, can be selected, bought, and used with minimal assistance, although we do recommend consulting with an allied health professional to ensure that the AT is best for you, and that you know how to use it safely.

Assistive technology can range in price. Low-cost AT might be a basic shower chair or assistive cutlery, while mid-cost AT might be more complex, like a powered wheelchair or a pressure care mattress. High-cost AT is usually complex, like a custom-made wheelchair or a specialised AAC device.

The two main funding options for assistive technology are through the NDIS, and via My Aged Care, which offers the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP) for low-level support, and the Home Care Package (HCP) service for high-level support. There are also other funding options for specific clients depending on your needs and location. The Australian Rehabilitation and Assistive Technology Association have developed an AT Funding Map of the range of options available - check it out at www.arata.org.au/access-&-funding/funding-your-at/
